WHAT IS ORTHOPAEDICS?
Orthopaedics can be simply defined as the discipline studying any disorder of the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

SPORTS MEDICINE
The clinic treats athletes of all types, from the "weekend warrior" to Olympians. There has been an increase in sports related injuries as many people are getting involved in sports and exercise due to the emphasis on wellness and health today. Most youth today are involved in some type of sports activity. The Bone & Joint Clinic offers a full spectrum of services for sports injuries. Our physicians care for the athletes at six area high schools and the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, work with youth sports leagues, and are involved with the YMCAs, and gymnastic programs. Three of the clinic's physicians work with Olympic athletes through programs of the United States Olympic Committee. The clinic's physicians are trained in the most current sports medicine techniques, from arthroscopic surgery of the knee, shoulder, elbow and wrist, to ACL repairs.

TOTAL JOINT REPLACEMENT
Modern medicine has brought many advances, but none more fulfilling than total joint replacements. Today, if a joint is destroyed through accident, disease, or age, we enable patients return to full and productive lives by replacing the joints. The clinic's physicians have experience performing hundreds of these procedures. There is nothing more gratifying than seeing patients come for their first few visits in wheelchairs, and return after surgery, on their feet, enjoying life.

INDUSTRIAL MEDICINE
The workplace can be a dangerous place. Whether you are operating a piece of heavy equipment or a compute terminal, injuries can occur. The clinic treats all kinds of work related injuries--the two most prevalent being back strains and repetitive motion injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome. The clinic works with employers, insurance companies, rehabilitation nurses, case managers, and physical therapists to aid patients in returning to work as quickly as possible.

PERFORMING ARTS MEDICINE
With Middle Tennessee being one of the entertainment capitals of the world, we see many performing artists. Whether they are dancers with foot and knee problems, drummers with sore backs, or guitar pickers with carpal tunnel syndrome--the clinic's physicians are trained to care for their special needs.

SPINE
Back problems plague most people at some point in their lives. The clinic's physicians are trained to care for back conditions from a minor strains to serious conditions requiring major surgeries. Two of the clinic's surgeons have extensive specialized training in spine surgery. The clinic has some of the most respected spine surgeons in Middle Tennessee.

FOOT & ANKLE
Surprisingly, many patients do not realize that orthopaedic surgeons are the medical doctors that care for foot and ankle problems. Whether the problem is ingrown toenails, bunions, corns, or sprains and fractures, the Bone & Joint Clinic's physicians are trained to care for these conditions. Foot pain is common and can often be helped with the proper medical care.

HIP & KNEE
Hip fractures and degenerative hip disease are common problems seen by the clinic's physicians. One of the clinic's physicians has extensive training in trauma care, and all have broad experience in total joint replacements.

KNEE
Knee problems are particularly numerous for athletes and senior citizens. The clinic treats hundreds of patients with knee complaints each year. The advent of arthroscopic surgery has made what was once major surgery now something that can be done on an outpatientbasis. Arthroscopic surgical procedures are tolerated well by the young and old alike. Many older patients require total knee replacements. Today, many patients are able to have both knees replaced in a single hospital stay.

EMERGENCIES
The Bone & Joint Clinic's physicians and professional staff can see emergencies in each of the clinic's offices, or the emergency rooms of Williamson Medical Center, Columbia Southern Hills Medical Center, or Columbia Horizon Medical Center. Obviously, serious emergencies need to go to the hospital, and one of the clinic's physicians should be requested. One of the clinic's physicians will always be available, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
