Dr. McNamara grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he attended LaSalle College High School. He pursued his undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. McNamara received his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina. He stayed in Durham to complete his residencies in general & thoracic surgery and then orthopaedic surgery at Duke University Medical Center. In 1990 he came to Nashville, Tennessee, to participate in a Fellowship program in adult spinal disorders at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. After completing his fellowship, he remained at Vanderbilt University Medical Center as an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation. Dr. McNamara joined The Bone & Joint Clinic in 1995. He is married and has one daughter.
