Orthopaedic surgeon Colin G. Looney, M.D., has joined the physicians at The Bone & Joint Clinic, where he specializes in sports medicine, hip arthroscopy, and the Ilizarov Method.
Looney comes to the clinic from Vail, Colorado, where he completed a sports medicine fellowship at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic. The Steadman Hawkins Sports Medicine Fellowship is considered one of the top sports fellowships in the country and provides its fellows an opportunity to work with numerous professional and elite athletes. In Vail, Looney received specialized training in hip arthroscopy, an innovative treatment performed by relatively few orthopaedic surgeons.
Prior to his fellowship, Looney completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. He served as resident team physician for Duke University and North Carolina Central University football and basketball teams. During residency, Looney was selected for a mini-fellowship in the Ilizarov Method at the Russian Ilizarov Scientific Center for Restorative Traumatology and Orthopaedics in Kurgan, Siberia. The Ilizarov Center is the largest orthopaedic hospital in the world and is renown for its contributions to orthopaedic medicine.
Looney earned his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina, where he graduated in the top 5% of his class. He received the William G. Anylan Senior Scholarship, was awarded a research fellowship from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and was named a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.
Looney received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. He graduated magna cum laude and was named a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. An NCAA scholar-athlete, Looney was captain of the wrestling team and received the A.E. Mathis War Memorial Wrestling Award.
In his spare time, Looney enjoys fly-fishing, hunting, sporting clays, backpacking, hiking, canoeing and kayaking. He is married and has a son.
