Dr. Tom Bartsokas (known by his patients as "Dr. Bart"), hails from New Athens, Illinois, and attended the University of Illinois for his undergraduate degree, the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse for his master's degree in Exercise Physiology and Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Although he completed a residency in Family Practice at Akron General Medical Center in Ohio and maintains his board certification in Family Medicine, Dr. Bart specializes in Sports Medicine, in which he holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications. More recently, Dr. Bart has become a Certified Clinical Densitometrist, following his completion of the required coursework and testing established by the International Society for Clinical Densitometry.
Dr. Bart has been with the Bone &joint Clinic since September 1994. Among his professional interests are: sports traumatology, overuse syndromes, sports training, injuries unique to running, osteoporosis, non-surgical treatment of chronic neck and low back pain, and fibromyalgia syndrome.
Included in Dr. Bart's resume are: an appointment to the U.S. Olympic Sports Medicine Society with assignments to the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta and the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan; founding member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine; Fellowship status in the American College of Sports Medicine; and former member of the U.S. Swimming Sports Medicine Society. In addition, Dr. Bart served as the troupe physician for the Ohio Chamber Ballet Company while living in Ohio and currently provides athletic medicine coverage to the sports teams at Fred J. Page High School.
Dr. Bart considers himself a sports enthusiast and has personally participated in baseball, basketball, long distance running and swimming events. He competed on the cross country and track teams while attending the University of Illinois and has a keen interest in optimum sports training. Dr. Bart is married and has two daughters who play basketball – much better than he is or was ever able to play.
